Reflections — The Neighbourhood
chapter 15 — moving forward

moving forward.

Two separate futures — both worthy of tending to, quietly and fully.

— for her —
  • Her nursing career — the path she chose because she wants to ease other people’s pain. The exams, the long shifts, the doubt, and the pride of standing in that uniform one day.
  • Her goals — built in her own rhythm, not rushed for anyone else.
  • Her family — the people who ground her, the grandfather she speaks of so tenderly, the home she protects.
  • Her dreams — the ones she’s told me about and the ones she’s kept to herself. All of them still waiting, still possible.
  • Her life beyond this relationship — wider, brighter, and entirely hers.

I want every one of those to unfold without this story holding her back.

— for me —
  • Independence — learning to stand steadier on my own.
  • Building something of my own — work, business, skills, something real and earned.
  • Becoming financially successful — not as a performance, but as a quiet responsibility to my future.
  • Working on myself — the patterns, the reactions, the parts that need patience, not punishment.
  • And eventually, visiting Australia — not as a chase, but as part of a life I’m building anyway, in its own right.

Becoming better is no longer a way to win her back. It’s something I want to do for myself — so I become someone I can live with, love or no love.

We move forward separately, not as a failed negotiation, but as two people choosing to carry what we learned into kinder lives.
